Interesting D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. Projects

Over the past 20yrs D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. has been involved in a variety of projects in both the Datacenter and Audio/Visual environments.  Because of our unique role as a distributor and educator of the technology products we represent, customers will ask D.Y. Nye Co. to interface with their customer to perform specific functions such as consultant, trainer, technician, etc…

Outlined below are some of the projects we have been asked to be a part of.

Video Capture Cards used to enhance usability studies at AT&T:

Statistically individuals turn over their personal electronics (cell phone, PDA, Tablet, etc…) every 6-9 months, which is a staggering fact when considering that most individuals own at least 2-4 of these type of electronic devices. Because of this turnover rate telecom organizations are in a relentless pursuit for an advantage over their competition, and one of the most important advantages a telecom group can gain is being to the market first with a new product.

In order to help streamline the “Usability Study” process and cut down on the time between conducting a study and receiving analysis, AT&T has decided to use the streaming ability of the Vision RGB e2 capture card to achieve instant feedback. By constructing a lab in which HD cameras are position on a test subject’s face and the screen of the mobile device, AT&T is able to capture both video feeds simultaneously, and then stream that video directly back to manufacture’s R&D and marketing departments, providing them with instant feedback regarding the use of their device. In addition to saving time for both AT&T and its partners, this new process has also reduced travel costs because no longer do auditors need to travel to observe the usability study now they can watch live as it happens from their own location and provide instant analysis.

Trade Show Exhibitor Spruces up product offerings with the X4:

Trade shows exhibits are designed to attract new customers and project a brand image for companies, to accomplish these goals booth exhibits must attract a high traffic rate. In order to drive traffic to a booth sometimes a “Shock & Awe” strategy is employed and one of the tools that can accomplish “Shock & Awe” is the X4 – pixel mapping device from Datapath.

The X4 is a standalone video controller that can accept high resolution video and images (up to 4k x 4k resolutions) and then spread them across 4-screens in any manner of odd shapes and sizes. In addition the X4 offers the ability to rotate, crop, and re-size the source material making it an invaluable tool when building an exhibit for any size booth. One of the major trade show exhibition groups recently picked up on this strategy and has worked the X4 into their product offerings seen below are some of the examples they recently created for their clients.

CageBuilding for Datacenter security:

A co-location center in the Pittsburgh area that provides customers with managed Network services such as Hosting, Disaster Recovery, and Managed Backup, contacted D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. about segmenting their raised floor space so that their customer’s equipment was not only digitally secured but physically secured as well.

Using a system of wire panels and security bolts, D.Y. Nye Co was able to construct security cages around specified groups of server enclosures. The cages are a modular design, thus the customer was able to customize the design of each cage, which included options of having the fencing installed underneath the raise floor and placing a roof over top the structure to fully secure the enclosure.

Data Center and Facility Management:

Many medium to large size corporations want the ability to manage from a single interface

  1. Servers: both virtual and physical, and control access to them
  2. Power: Consumption both within the Data Center and company wide
  3. Temperature: Cooling for Data Center and HVAC system for the entire corporation

A mid-size pharmaceutical company in West Chester, PA contacted D.Y. Nye Co., Inc about 7 years ago with the desire to implement a solution that would permit them to manage their servers both locally within the Data Center and from remote locations via TCP/IP. In addition to the management of the main Data Center, IT Managers wanted the server management solution to provide them with the ability to integrate their remote offices’ infrastructure and limit remote users’ access to their facility’s servers.

D.Y. Nye Co., Inc. presented Raritan’s Command Center and Dominion series switches as a solution for the pharmaceutical company for two main reasons. First Raritan’s Dominion series solution is a modular solution that can be implemented in phases and can grow as the environment grows. Second Raritan’s Command Center when combined with Power IQ and DC Track offers the pharmaceutical group a foundation of feature sets which could be implemented in the future and would allow the users to manage other infrastructure metrics such as;

  1. Power Consumption
  2. Cable management
  3. Environmental metrics

The pharmaceutical group did agree that Raritan’s Command Center and Dominion Series switches afforded them the best solution for their needs, and over the past 4 years have deployed switches at their headquarter facility in West Chester PA, and their remote facilities in Salt Lake City, UT and Frazer, PA. All units are centrally managed out of West Chester offering managers a centralized view of both their servers and users. As the pharmaceutical company’s infrastructure continues to grow Raritan’s Command Center solution will continue to provide a platform which is versatile and offer enterprise management capabilities. Below are some screen captures of the Command Center and Power IQ’s Dashboard.
